Timing belt question

Post by pol » Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:48 pm

Just fitted a new belt after the big snap.

I have been turning the engine over with a socket on the crankshaft, as you do and the belt is sitting further toward the flywheel end of the car on the camshaft sprocket, if that makes any sense. There is a gap on the camshaft sprocket where no belt runs.

My question is this:

Should the belt fit flush with the camshaft sprocket? Does it matter?
I'm pretty sure it cannot go on any other way, and pretty sure it is the right belt. Have counted the teeth plenty times to make sure.

I had the same when replacing my cambelt 2 weeks ago. I don't think it really matters as the cambelt sprocket is wider than the cambelt itself.

the sprocket is wider than the belt, stops the edges of the sprocket from wrecking the belt :D
