Re: International Meet up - 17/18/19 May 2024 - Bruggen
I soooo wish I could attend this. It's exactly why I bought the car, to attend events like this. Bloody kids and bloody exams! 🤬😡 Mine just said he wanted to come with me on Saturday 18th, despite being in the middle of his exams. It's Pentecost weekend, which is in The Netherlands followed by a ba...

Re: Am I crazy for attempting this?
I have 13 cars, including three Volvo 480s awaiting restoration. Some were involved in crashes by inexperienced drivers, prompting me to salvage usable parts. The remaining 480s were neglected until recently when I started working on one, only to realize the challenges of restoring them due to rapi...

Re: Any C30 owners?
If an affordable C30 had crossed my path, I would have bought that instead of the S70, and maybe I will in the future. Here's the choice of engines I've investigated, and which to avoid. As the C30 is based on the same platform as the Ford Focus, with most parts having FoMoCo stamped on them, the en...

My Philips DC532 radio/cassette unit, bought new in 1995, has the same CD-changer input, but it can be configured for AUX input as well! So I can use that (definitely period correct ) head unit, while secretly attaching it to a modern Bluetooth adapter.

Re: Speedo sticking around 50mph
Definitely the needle catching on something. The speedometer is driven by a PWM signal, which doesn't suddenly stop and jump. Peeling of the speedo face is very common and unfortunately I don't have any faces in miles left (tons of them in km of course), so your best bet is sourcing a non-peeling UK...

Re: Headlamps not parking properly
The popups can be compared with windscreen wiper motors, they have a parking position, but in this case there are two parking positions, up and down. There is a conducting disc inside the motor where three contacts trace its surface. https://i.imgur.com/a1q8Svb.png Note there are cuts 180 degrees ap...

I might have one, but I'm in a different country. I'm curious what's wrong with the current one, as they rarely fail. Unlike their predecessor CEM-00/01 which is prone to water ingress.

Re: Heaters starting to sound dodgy
Can confirm that it was this piece of paper that was making the weird noise! 😂 not quite sure how steering effected it but with it now removed the fan sounds normal again! Not sure how it got there but looks like it's been there a while 🤔 https://i.postimg.cc/PfzhxMxn/IMG-20231019-180424.jpg Produk...

Re: My Infocentre has died
If the infocentre lights up and the bulb is confirmed working, it is mostly down to one of these: 1. Fuse for infocentre computer blown. Same fuse as cigarette lighter, so plug in a phone charger and check if it works. 2. Thin blue-brown wire not connected to alternator ground. This is the ground wi...

Re: Gearbox oil ( manual )
The link is dead, but ELF 75W80 TRANSELF NFX is what you should be looking for. The Renault JB gearbox in the 480 takes 3.4 litres. 75W80 GL4+ oil designed for Renault Jxx gearboxes used to be called TRJ (Renauilt Technical Note 6012A from 2004 specifies them), then NFJ (but NFP could be used as wel...

Re: Infocenter disco mode
If anyone else has had experiences with these kind of display faults i would still really like to hear about it! ;) For the record: this problem is most probably not caused by faulty electronics, but by a faulty connection between the computer and the display. Communication takes place using 5 pins...

Fietsaapje (which is Dutch for bicycle monkey :D), I am living in Houten, just 10 km from your place and I have both profound knowledge of the 480's electronics and a large stock of spare parts. Orlando lives just 40 km further if there's need for more spares. You are cordially invited to take your ...

Re: The Bean Counter theory
Not all features have been deleted because accountants wanted it. Some were just giving too much trouble in aftersales and were deleted out of simplicity. Or should I say, were so poorly designed you'd be better off without it - bulb failure only on brake lights (too many false alarms) - popup relay...

Wow, that is a new one for the list of "issues which make the headlight fail" :o The left hand side popup of my car refused to go up after I've refueled this morning, I had some puzzling looks from other customers at the service station when I said "there it moved! no it was you pushing the cage" af...

Re: Parts needed urgently
What's the difference between an a/c and non-a/c power steering pump?
As new ones are still available, with a 5-rib pulley: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ridex/8156292
and new brake calipers are also still available: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ridex/12747549
(though I don't like the quality)

Re: Newby to 480s
There is a Volvo 480 breaker in The Netherlands and he might even have a two-tone wing, but sending the part to the UK will be your biggest worry. What works best is drive up here and get the part (and other parts you might need) and drive them back home.

Re: Old one being broken in Norfolk
It doesn't make sense, E577 UEX has been registered June 1988 and serial number 528322 is way past the change of PTC to NTC sensors. It should have an NTC sensor ECU.

Motors differ in size of the connecting cable, but even the short one connects to where a long one should have been.
